THE LABELS

                                           By Clare Carver, Designer

All three Resonance Vineyard labels are the product of a creative process where the client, printer and designer worked together as a team. An initial walk through the vineyard with Kevin and Carla Chambers offered me first-hand knowledge of their farming practices and incredibly beautiful and unique site. On my second visit, I brought my camera and sketch book.

I presented Kevin and Carla with many diverse options for their original Pinot Noir label. Although they’ve been viticulturalists for 19 years and involved in the wine industry for 30, the 2006 vintage was the first year they’d made wine under their own label. They were looking for an image both unique and elegant, one that captured the essence of their Biodynamically® certified vineyard.

The red oval swirl on the Resonance Vineyard Pinot Noir label was originally part of a more complex design, but this simple and elegant version seemed to capture both the essence of biodynamics and the character of resonating energy forces. It provides a visual abstraction of the word resonance and also represents the active stirring of a biodynamic preparation (the preps are stirred for up to an hour prior to spraying). The astronomical calendar is used in biodynamics to guide planting, harvesting and spraying. And, the swirl also represents the movement of celestial bodies as seen in the heavens.

The decision to extend the swirl to three separate labels was a collaborative idea that worked visually. The separate labels were made possible by some creative work done by the printer Label One and the tireless attention to detail by Tom Talarico. The label was printed on tree-free paper, in keeping with Kevin and Carla’s environmental stewardship, and the desire to make the smallest footprint possible in the packaging of this product.

The swirl concept was carried through to the g³ white blend, although colors were changed and the size was altered to fit the different bottle.

Pulse Pinot Noir’s label was a variation on the theme of patterned and random energy.  The illustration of the grasses on the front label connects the wine to the diverse, seasonal plant growth at Resonance Vineyard. The colors reflect the soil in which the plants grow. And the brand name of Pulse was selected because it carries forward the energetic signature of Resonance Vineyard and owners Kevin and Carla Chambers’ biodynamic farming practices.
